Carleton Awards 15 Honorary Degrees at June Convocation
Carleton University is awarding 15 honorary degrees at this year’s Spring Convocation ceremonies, which will be held from June 7-10, 2016. In total, about 4,380 students are receiving degrees.
Two ceremonies will be held each day in the University Fieldhouse. The morning ceremonies will take place at 9:30 a.m. and the afternoon ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. All recipients will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Tuesday, June 8, “in recognition of her career in rehabilitation science, her work in the field of child psychiatry, and as a Canadian author all while serving Canada, especially at Rideau Hall.”
She began her career in Kingston, Ont., as a psychiatric occupational therapist with young adults at Kingston General Hospital, and then worked as a therapist at Beechgrove, a treatment centre for children with learning and behavioural problems. When the family moved to Toronto, she worked at the Crippled Children’s Centre in Occupational Therapy.
In 1966, she completed her studies in physical and occupational therapy at the University of Toronto. Later, she completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Science at McGill University, and her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at McGill University.
Mrs. Johnston recently published her first novel, Matrons and Madams, a fictional account of life in southwestern Alberta during a colourful, post-Great War era, based on her grandmother’s experiences.
His Excellency David Johnston
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, the 28th Governor General of Canada, will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Tuesday, June 7, “in recognition of his successful career as an educator, brilliant leader of many post-secondary institutions and his service to Canada as Governor General.”
Mr. Johnston has dedicated his life to public service. A strong believer in both equality of opportunity and excellence, he spent most of his career in higher education as a professor and later administrator at several of Canada’s leading universities.
Mr. Johnston has focused his mandate on strengthening learning and innovation, philanthropy and volunteerism, and families and children. Since his installation as governor general in October 2010, he has travelled widely across Canada and around the world, connecting, honouring and inspiring Canadians and their global partners.
Gail Asper
Gail Asper will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Tuesday, June 7, “in recognition of her humanitarian work, advocacy for human rights, and leading volunteer service to the community.”
The president of The Asper Foundation, Gail Asper practised law for a number of years in Halifax before joining Canwest Global Communications Corp. in 1989 as general counsel, corporate secretary and a director.
She has served on the boards of numerous non-profit groups, including the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and United Way, and is currently board chair of the National Arts Centre Foundation, a board member of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and a governor of Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
She worked for 14 years to develop the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which opened in Winnipeg in 2014. She has received numerous awards for community service, including the Governor General’s Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts, the Order of Manitoba and Officer of the Order of Canada.
Daniel Alfredsson
Daniel Alfredsson will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Tuesday, June 7 “in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Canadian hockey and, in particular, his commitment to the community through philanthropic efforts that include mental health awareness and advocacy for equality for athletes, regardless of their sexual orientation.”
Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, “Alfie” was a member of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club from 1994 to 2013, including 14 years as team captain. He and his wife Birgitta have four sons – Hugo, Louis, Fenix and William.
Alfredsson represented Sweden internationally 14 times, including the 2006 gold medal and 2014 silver medal winning Swedish Olympic teams.
He won the National Hockey League Rookie of the Year in 1996, and two NHL leadership awards—the 2012 King Clancy Memorial trophy and the 2013 Mark Messier Leadership award.
He is most proud of his work in Ottawa fighting the stigma against mental illness. His efforts have helped people open up and talk about mental health.
Jodi White,
Jodi White will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 “in recognition of a distinguished career in journalism, public service and volunteer leadership.”
Her career spans the nexus of journalism, government, the private sector and the not-for-profit sector. She is committed to the importance of dialogue and collaboration between sectors for improved public policy.
She has worked as CBC TV news reporter and radio producer, was chief of staff to the prime minister and the minister of Foreign Affairs, served as vice-president at a major Canadian multinational and was president of the Public Policy Forum.
She played senior roles in six successive federal election campaigns. She participated in international projects concerning Eastern Europe and the Old City of Jerusalem.
White has served on numerous boards, including Tides Canada, Action Canada, the National Theatre School, the Canadian International Council and the Canadian Journalism Foundation.
She is a distinguished senior fellow at Carleton University.
Margaret Bloodworth
Margaret Bloodworth will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 “in recognition of her outstanding career in public service and leadership service to the community.’’
She completed her distinguished public service career as national security advisor to the prime minister and associate secretary to the cabinet, a post she held from 2006 to 2008. Prior to that, she was deputy minister of transport (a post she held during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks), deputy minister of National Defence, and the first deputy minister of Public Safety.
She chairs the boards of the Council of Canadian Academies and Cornerstone Housing for Women and is a member of the boards of the Community Foundation of Ottawa and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
A member of the Order of Canada, she has been awarded the Public Service of Canada Outstanding Achievement Award and the Vanier Medal of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada.
Karim Rashid
Karim Rashid will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 9 “in recognition of his outstanding and internationally acclaimed contributions to the profession of industrial design and popular culture.”
With designs for water bottles, furniture, appliances, laptops, jewelry and condominiums, his work spans the fields of fashion, architecture and art to transform our daily living. He has worked with companies such as Samsung, Method, Umbra, Citibank and Veuve Clicquot.
A frequent winner of prestigious international awards, he designed the interiors of the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia, the Universita Metro Station in Naples and the Semiramis Hotel in Athens. More than 3,000 of his designs have been put into production and his work is on permanent display in 20 collections and galleries around the world.
Karim studied at Carleton and completed graduate studies in Milan and Naples under Ettore Sottsass and in the Rodolfo Bonetto studio. In 1993, Rashid opened his own studio in New York City with offices in China.
Peter Coughlin
Peter Coughlin will be awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 9, “in recognition of his leadership in business development, architectural heritage and his volunteer service in the fields of health and education.”
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University (1975) and an MBA from Western University (1979).
He started his business career in 1980 with the Canadian National Railway Pension Fund before moving to Cemp Investments. In 1987, he became senior vice-president of real estate investments for Cemp’s successor, Claridge Properties Inc., and was appointed president in 1991.
He co-founded Redbourne Properties Inc. in 1995. It manages a real estate portfolio in excess of five million square feet, including some of Montreal’s premium commercial buildings, such as Place Montreal Trust and Place du Parc.
He has served as board chair of Lower Canada College and the Montreal General Hospital Foundation. In 2010, he joined McGill’s Board of Governors.
Mr. Coughlin was on the organizing committee of Montreal’s Hockey Helps the Homeless.
John Ruddy
John Ruddy will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 9 “in recognition of his leadership as an entrepreneur and developer contributing to the fabric of Ontario’s infrastructure, and as a patron of the arts, history and sports.”
He graduated from Carleton in 1975 and began his career in Toronto. He launched his own company, Trinity Development Group, in 1991 and relocated back to Ottawa in 1993. Trinity is an industry leader in retail and innovative mixed-use developments.
He has held positions as honorary chair of the Royal Ottawa Hospital Campaign for Mental Health, the Ashbury College Opening Doors Campaign and the Campaign Cabinet for the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence.
John Ruddy is lead governor of the CFL Ottawa Redblacks, managing partner of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, owner of the Redblacks, Ottawa Fury and Ottawa 67’s and president of Old Crows Football Inc.
Tom Jenkins
Tom Jenkins will be presented with the degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 9 “in recognition of his stellar contributions to education, enterprise and innovation in both the public and private sectors in Canada.”
He is chair of the board of OpenText Corp. of Waterloo, the largest software company in Canada, as well as chair of the National Research Council and the 10th chancellor of the University of Waterloo.
Mr. Jenkins pioneered many technologies commonly used today to manage digital information. He’s the author or co-author of 10 widely read books on Internet publishing.
He is a member of the board of Manulife Financial Corp., Thomson Reuters Inc. and TransAlta Corp. He is also a director of the Business Council of Canada, the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary and a member of the advisory council of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Bonnie M. Patterson
Bonnie Patterson will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Friday, June 10, “in recognition of her leadership and service to Trent University and to all universities in Ontario as she guided them though changing times and built a strong network of shared vision.”
A champion of higher education and a role model for women in leadership, Bonnie Patterson is recognized for many firsts in the university sector.
She obtained a BA and MLS from Western University and joined its faculty. At Ryerson, she moved into academic administration and was the president’s special adviser during transformation to full university status. She was the first woman dean of business in Canada. After 11 years as the longest-serving president and vice-chancellor of Trent, she served nine years as president and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities.
She has won the Order of Canada, Order of Ontario, Queen’s Diamond and Jubilee medals and recognition in the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.
John Daniel O’Leary
John Daniel O’Leary will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Friday, June 10 “in recognition of his lifelong commitment and leadership in advancing literacy among marginalized and under-served communities and his service to the unique educational opportunity offered by Frontier College.”
Born in Toronto, he studied history and political science at Carleton while playing linebacker for the Ravens football team.
He spent a year studying with the Jesuits, teaching in schools in Chicago and Winnipeg, and lived with the L’Arche community, assisting people with special needs. After teaching literacy in an Ontario prison, he joined Frontier College as a literacy teacher in Manitoba prisons. He then joined the Frontier staff and, in 1990, was appointed president of the organization. His goal was to recruit university students across Canada as literacy tutors for disadvantaged and oppressed people.
He now works in development at Teach For Canada and serves on the boards of the Christian Resource Centre and the Toronto Native Friendship Centre.
Barbara McInnes
Barbara McInnes will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Friday, June 10, “in recognition of her service to the community as a volunteer and local organizer and for her development of the Community Foundation of Ottawa.”
McInnes joined the foundation at its 1987 inception, overseeing its growth to more than $100 million in assets and creating an international reputation for excellence.
She has been on the Board of Governors at Carleton University, president of the Ottawa Estate Planning Council and the Ottawa School of Art, and a board member of the United Way and numerous other associations. She currently serves as a director of the Shorefast Foundation, HUB Ottawa, the Telus Ottawa Community Board and Match International Women’s Fund.
Barbara won the 2014 Volunteer Ottawa Lifetime Achievement Award, 2012 Key to the City, 2008 Order of Canada, 2004 Community Service Award – Academy of Medicine Ottawa and the 2001 Volunteer of the Year – Volunteer Ottawa.
Tony Urquhart
Tony Urquhart will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Friday, June 10, “in recognition of his fine and internationally recognized contributions to the visual arts in Canada.”
Tony Urquhart began his exhibiting career in 1956 at the Isaacs Gallery in Toronto. His art has since been shown in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
His work is in the collections of many major art museums across Canada and the globe, such as the National Gallery of Canada and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In 1967, he co-founded what is known today as CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des artistes canadiens), which is the national voice of Canada’s professional visual artists.
He served as an artist-in-residence and then as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo from 1960 until 1999.
He was named to the Order of Canada in 1995 and received the Governor General’s award for Visual Arts in 2009.
Jane Urquhart
Jane Urquhart will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Friday, June 10, “in recognition of her extraordinary talent and success as an author, enriching Canada’s literary canon and the lives of her readers.”
She is the author of eight internationally acclaimed novels, a collection of short fiction and four books of poetry. Her work, which often centres on relationships between Canada and Ireland, is published in many countries and has been translated into numerous foreign languages.
Ms. Urquhart has received the Marian Engel Award and the Harbourfront Festival Prize, and is a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
She has been writer-in-residence at the University of Ottawa and Memorial University. She also held the Presidential Writer-in-Residence Fellowship at the University of Toronto. She has given readings and lectures around the world. She has served on several international prize juries and is the editor of the most current Penguin Book of Canadian Short Stories.
